The maintenance process is one of the most important activities that help us to ensure that a machine or a mechanism works correctly, and it will not hurt any assets. So, Understanding the Process will help us a lot in order to perform this activity with more accuracy and more efficient.
I do not want to get deeply in the process. I just want to tell you the overview of this job.
First of all, the most important thing for performing maintenance on a device is to understand the design of that device. This means that the person who is in charge of performing maintenance should know how that device works from the designer’s point of view. It is True that there are always guidelines for this but, it is suggested to read the user manual and technical manual to understand why each line in the guideline exists. I believe this is the most important Part of the maintenance.
Secondly, I prefer to divide the process into smaller Parts even if there are only 3 steps for doing that, partitioning is recommended. This will help especially when the process is too complex. For instance, consider a broken washing machine that you do not know anything about the failure. It would be very helpful if you, imaginary, divide the machine parts into Mechanical Parts and Electrical Parts and go deeper and divide the electrical part into Electromotor or board. This way it is less possible to be confused, and it will help you to perform faster and more efficiently.
Now, you find the broken part, and it is time to repair it or change that part. I will not tell you anything more about this matter because it would not be universal advice.
After repairing the broken part, it is very important to perform test the device one another time. That is simply because sometimes when a part is broken, maybe other part’s failure cannot be found. So, it is important to see if all parts are performing correctly or not. And please remember to see if any part is going to be broken soon or not and write it down in the history of maintenance of that device. This is also very helpful and helps you to prioritize the inspection in the next maintenance.
Now after the maintenance is finished, you can hand the device over to the user and remember to explain what you did and how he can use the device better.
Let me know if I miss something in between.
